Make your project folder
Every project needs a home. You will make one dedicated folder for the entire website — the kit, the brand documents, the pages, the photographs, all of it in one place you can see.
1Your computerEverything else you keep on it, including your practice files
2my-firm-websiteWhere everything for the website lives — and only the website
3Your website projectBuild Kit, brand documents, pages, images
Make the folder
- Somewhere you will find again — your Documents folder is ideal — create a new folder and name it
my-firm-website. Lowercase, hyphens, no spaces. - Leave it completely empty for now. In the next module you will drop the Build Kit into it.
Open it in Claude
- Desktop app: in the Code tab, choose Local (which simply means “use the files on my own computer”), then click Select folder and pick your
my-firm-websitefolder. - Terminal: type
cd Documents/my-firm-website, press Return, then typeclaude.
Give Claude the narrowest folder that contains the work. Opening your whole Documents folder, or your Desktop, hands it a much larger view of your machine than this job needs.
Be clear about what that discipline is and isn’t. The Build Kit you install next module includes a standing instruction to stay inside this folder, and Claude follows it reliably — but it is an instruction it obeys, not a locked door. Anyone who tells you the folder is a technical wall is overselling it. Keep the folder small and the question never comes up.
Nothing about building a website requires a single client document, matter number, or name. So put none of them here, and do not point Claude at a folder that holds them.
It is worth saying plainly because the reflex to “give it context” is strong: when Claude asks for real details in Module 3, it means your bar admissions, your fee structure, your office address, and testimonials you already have written consent to publish. It never means a client file. If a piece of information would make you pause before reading it aloud in a courthouse hallway, it does not belong in this project.
Claude is open on the Code tab, pointed at your empty my-firm-website folder, with a chat box waiting. One short lesson left in the setup.
