Module 1 · Open your website & meet Claude Code

Let Claude read your website

8 min

Before changing anything, let Claude Code read your website and get its bearings — and let it get to know you. Thirty seconds here makes everything afterward smoother, because Claude will understand what it’s working with.

Paste this into Claude Code

This is the first thing to say in a brand-new session. Copy it exactly:

Get oriented — paste this first

Hi Claude. This is my business website and I'm not technical, so please keep everything simple and explain
each step in plain English. First, take a look through this project and tell me:

1. What kind of website this is, and what it's built with — in everyday terms.
2. Where the main things live: the page text, the images and logo, and the colors.
3. Whether it's already set up to preview on my computer, and whether it's connected to GitHub and a live site.

Then give me a short, friendly summary and tell me what you'd suggest we do first. Don't change anything yet.

What you’ll get back

  • A plain-English summary of your website — what it is and how it’s organized.
  • Where the editable things are (so later, “change the headline” is easy for Claude to find).
  • A read on what’s already connected — which we’ll use when it’s time to publish.
This is the habit that makes you good at this

Notice what just happened: you didn’t need to know anything technical — you asked, and Claude explained. That’s the whole skill. Any time you’re unsure, ask Claude to explain in plain English. It never gets tired of the question.

What success looks like

Claude has described your website back to you in plain terms, and you have a sense of what’s where. You’re ready to see it running.

If you get stuck

If Claude says it can’t find a website in the folder, you probably opened the wrong folder (or a folder one level too high). Tell Claude: “I think I opened the wrong folder — can you help me find and open the one with my website files?”
