Module 6 · Editing Without an Editor

When in doubt, describe the edit

15 min

Here’s the lesson that ties the whole course together. When you’re not sure how to do an edit — don’t learn a tool. Describe it. Upload the image, say what you want changed in plain English, look at what you got, and say what to change next. That’s the entire skill, and it’s the same one you’ve been using on your logo, your colors, and your fonts.

Two free-enough tools do this, and they work the same way. Pick whichever you already have open.

Option 1 — Google Gemini (“Nano Banana”)

The best free conversational image editor in 2026.

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in with a free Google account.
  2. In the prompt bar, click the image tool and upload the photo you want to edit.
  3. Type the change in plain English. Gemini edits while keeping the rest of the image intact.
  4. Keep the conversation going to refine — “make the logo smaller,” “warmer lighting.” Download when you’re happy. The free quota is limited, then it falls back to an older model.

Option 2 — ChatGPT image editing

Already in your toolkit from the logo and color modules.

  1. In chatgpt.com, start a chat, click + / upload, and add your image.
  2. Describe the edit in chat — or use the built-in select tool to circle a region and describe just that change.
  3. Iterate in follow-ups. Remember the free tier is only about 2–3 image renders a day, so it’s best for the occasional edit; Plus lifts that if you’re editing all afternoon.

The kinds of things you just say out loud

You don’t need special wording. Talk to it like a helpful assistant looking over your shoulder:

  • “Change the background to a bright, clean studio white.”
  • “Brighten this and remove the clutter on the counter.”
  • “Put this logo on the coffee cup on the table.”
  • “Make the lighting warmer and a bit softer.”
  • “Remove the person walking in the background.”

Then look at the result and say the next change. One request at a time gets you exactly where you want to be — the same one-change-at-a-time rhythm you used on your logo.

Power-user aside

Adobe now runs a “Photoshop in ChatGPT” option for more precise, controllable edits from inside the chat. You don’t need it — but it’s there the day you want finer control without leaving the conversation.

The two hard limits — every single time
  • Text. AI still misspells and can’t match your brand font. Add text in Canva or Pixlr afterward.
  • Exact sizes. AI won’t reliably output a precise pixel dimension. Crop or resize in Canva or Pixlr afterward.
The habit, not the tool

This is the whole course in one move: describe what you want, look at what you got, say what to change. You used it to make a logo, choose colors, and pair fonts — and now it edits any image you’ll ever need. You’re not learning software anymore. You’re just talking.
